OVERVIEW Learners will explore the fossilization process through creating a relief-block print.

SUPPLIES, EQUIPMENT AND RESOURCES Ink rollers 3-4 Ink Pallets 2-4 (One for each color) Water Soluable printing ink Styrofoam plates 1 per student Photocopies of a variety of line drawings depicting fossils Images of fossils for visual reference Images of block prints

FINE ART STANDARDS Standard 4.V.R.1: Compare responses to a work of art before and after working in similar media. Standard 4.V.R.2: Analyze components in visual imagery that convey messages.

INTEGRATED STANDARDS Science Standard 4: Students will understand how fossils are formed, where they may be found in Utah, and how they can be used to make inferences. -Through observation, examination and replication in drawing form. Objective 1: Describe Utah fossils and explain how they were formed. a. Identify features of fossils that can be used to compare them to living organisms that are familiar (e.g., shape, size and structure of skeleton, patterns of leaves).

CLOSURE/SUMMARY

OBJECTIVES Learners will explore the printmaking process directly. Students will make coparisons between block printmaking and the impressions left by fossils. Learners will compare their impressions of block printing before and after experiencing it directly.

INTEGRATION INFORMATION This lesson operates most efficiently if the students are already familiar with the fossilization process, either through earlier projects, or if their regular teacher has prefaced it.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS What can studying the fossilized remains of creatures tell us about how that creature lived? What inferences can we make? How are the processes of relief printing similar to fossil impressions? How does experiencing an artform change how I feel about it?

DIFFERENTIATION Several teaching strategies are used including: 1. Oral review of fossilization process. 2. Visul depiction of references 3. Tactile print making processes. 4. Individualized coaching. 5. Live demonstration. I have some students in 4th grade that use english as a second language. Live demonstrations of expectations and drawing procedures will be provided.
