OVERVIEW Learners will look at how early explorers created maps. Learners will view and interpret a variety of map types. Learners will create an artwork that reflects principles of topographical map making.

4th GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS

Standard 1 Students will understand the relationship between the physical geography in Utah and human life.

Objective 1 Classify major physical geographic attributes of Utah.Lesson a: Identify Utah's latitude, longitude, hemisphere, climate, natural resources, landforms, and regions using a variety of geographic tools. Examine the forces at work in creating the physical geography of Utah (e.g. erosion, seismic activity, climate change). Objective 2 Analyze how physical geography affects human life in Utah. Objective 3 Analyze how human actions modify the physical environment.

5th GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS

Standard 1 Students will understand how the exploration and colonization of North America transformed human history. lesson a- Using maps - including pre-1492 maps - and other geographic tools, locate and analyze the routes used by the explorers. Determine reasons for the exploration of North America (e.g., religious, economic, political).

4th GRADE FINE ART STANDARDS Students will understand, evaluate and articulate how works of art convey meaning for the observer as well as the creator (Standards 4.V.R.1–4).Standard 4.V.R.2: Analyze components in visual imagery that convey messages.Standard 4.V.R.3: Refer to contextual information and analyze relevant subject matter, characteristics of form, and use of media.

5th GRADE FINE ART STANDARDS

Standard 5.V.P.3: Cite evidence about how an exhibition in a museum or other venue presents ideas and provides information about a specific concept or topic.Students will relate artistic skills, ideas, and work with personal meaning and external context (Standards 5.V.CO.1–2).Standard 5.V.CO.1: Apply formal and conceptual vocabularies of art and design to view surroundings in new ways through art-making. DIFFERENTIATION Several teaching strategies are used including: 1. Oral review 2. Visul depiction of references 3. Tactile 4. Individualized coaching 5. Live demonstration I have some students in 4th grade that use english as a second language. Live demonstrations of expectations and creation procedures will be provided.
