Word Cloud Art Lesson

OVERVIEW Learners will explore a topic by creating an image that has the shape of an object, with descriptive words filling the object.

INTEGRATED STANDARDS Writing Standard 2: write informative texs to examine a topic and convey ideas… Lesson a. Introduce a topic and group related information together, include illustrations.

OBJECTIVES

Learners will investigate a subject and use language to express as

many characteristics of that item as conceivable.

Learners will explore digital art making processes and graphic design.

TEACHING AND TIMELINE

INTRODUCTION (15 Min) Visit computer lab or use chrome books. Have students log into wordart.com. Under an account that you have previously set up. Display for them the username and password (you can change later if needed). Show them examples of word clouds and discuss descriptive language, adjectives in particular.

DEMONSTRATION (10 Min) Demonstrate how to create a new project. Have students name project Teacher's last name- Their name. This helps in organizing projects in your account. Circulate room and help set this up with students. (10 Min)Select Shape tab. Demonstrate picking one shape. Animals work well, but depending on your subject focus many shapes templates are available. Select the Words tab. Select the first slot and right a word in the box that describes your object or that is related to your object. For example, if you selected a rooster, you might write gobbler. Hit enter, and write another word. Brainstorm as many words as you can and demonstrate how to write a word and push enter. Circulate room and help students do the same. Help them brainstorm. Ask students to come up with at least 20 words to describe their animal or object. Show the students the font tab and follow same process as before, but ave them hit the visualize button after selecting a font. Watch their faces light up. Have them hit the save button.

WORK PERIOD Work period is intermingled with demonstration. After session print out images created by the class. This is a little time consuming, but can be done when students are not in the room.

CLOSURE/SUMMARY

INTEGRATION INFORMATION Share descriptive words with class and discuss adjectives. Read an adjective rich text selection.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS How is art used in graphic design? How do descriptive words relate to images? How can I express in words and images an idea? DIFFERENTIATION Several teaching strategies are used including: 1. Oral lecture, with direct instruction and active response. 2. Visual display, including live demonstration. 3. Individual instruction and feedback.

HISTORICAL ELEMENT Discuss how computers have changed art making practices. Optional select a well known descriptive text segment to read to the class.
